New quilt shop to open soon in Superior

The Cabin Fever Quilt Guild has spawned yet another new local business.

Judy Carlson plans to open a full-service quilt shop in Superior, which will be named, appropriately enough, Cabin Fever Country Quilts.

The location at 106 W. Third Ave., just down the block from Castles IGA and Cenex, used to be the home of Becky’s Superior Cuts.

Judy plans to be open six days a week for a couple of weeks during grand opening—Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Regular hours will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

The shop will offer all the basic quilting supplies that it takes to start quilting, including a starter’s kit with a cutting board, a rotary cutter, and rulers. She will carry fabric and notions, and will add to her stock the supplies that people request.

She also plans to offer quilting classes in the shop.

“We encourage new quilters to come in and learn to quilt,” she said.

Judy is hoping to be open in the two weeks. The event will include specials and door prizes, and will be well publicized with signs throughout the county.

The shop will be a tremendous convenience for area quilters. “If they run out of thread, they’re not 45 minutes or 50 miles from Missoula. We’re right down the street,” she said.

The quilters in the West End are looking forward to the grand opening, she said. “They’re all real excited about it.”

Judy said she has been involved in quilting for about 12 years, and has had the dream of opening a quilt shop for the past three years.

“There have just been lot of setbacks over the last three years, but I’ve never lost my dream for getting this open,” she said. “Now I’m starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I guess some dreams really do come true.”

As time goes on, she also plans to add materials for knitting, crocheting, and embroidery.

But for now, the shop will start small and expand with support from the community, she said.

“Once I find out what people want, I’ll be able to go from there. Right now I’m just starting out with the basics. I want to make this a quilt shop where they can get what they want—not stuff I want, but stuff they want,” she said.

The shop is at least the second local business that has come out of the local quilters’ group, the Cabin Fever Quilt Guild. DeLoyce Tyler and Kathleen Brown started the business Mountain Patchwork in 2004, selling framed quilt art, weathered barn wood frames, patterns, and kits. The products can be purchased directly from their website, www.mountainpatchwork.com.  DeLoyce placed the ad in the paper that launched the group, and served as its first president. Kathleen was the second president.
