(Missoula)--Make a little room on the trophy case Superior. Lady Bobcat JaNece Godin defeated Amber Keil of Conrad in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0 for a 2-0 win at the Class B-C state tennis tournament, earning herself the singles state title Saturday afternoon at the University of Montana in Missoula.
“This has been my dream,” said Godin after her victory. “Since school started this year I’ve said that my goal is to be a state champion and I got it.”
A day after beating Boulder’s Jayce Cooper yesterday in Missoula – an opponent that Godin had lost to twice in the regular season and who Godin said was the toughest tennis test of her career – Godin took to the courts at the U of M after a rain delay postponed the championship match.
Godin led early in the set at 2-0, trailed briefly at 3-4 before taking the set 6-4 with volley that hugged the baseline to stay in play. Godin then dominated the second set –and ace to push the score to 45-30 before a volley skipped past Keil for the win.
After the win, Godin was rushed by her mother, Joellen, and smothered in hugs. Godin’s state championship – coming after a third place at state last year – also comes a day before her father’s birthday and that the celebration will make its way to Applebee’s for dinner tonight.
JaNece advanced to the championship by beating Cooper 6-2, 6-4 on Friday.
