JV b-ballers vanquish Victor

by Mark Hebert

Alberton’s Junior Varsity Basketball team looked pretty sharp on Thursday in Victor as they nailed down a 57-43 win over the Pirates getting 19-points from senior Matt Vicek and 13 from freshmen Cody Kohlwes.

“We picked it up in the second half but we were kind of sluggish in the first,” said Vicek. “We started playing like we are supposed to.”

He attributed the slow start to poor ball control but added that once the Panthers got comfortable running their offense that things went smoothly.

The first quarter saw the Panthers squander and early 7-4 lead, five coming from Kohlwes in the first two minutes, to head into the second period down 11-10. Vicek would drop the first points of the second coming from a nice bounce-pass feed from Matt Lausch to give the Panthers a 12-11 lead, a lead that they wouldn’t relinquish.

Kohlwes knocked down two three-pointers in the third quarter and Vicek and a bucket by Cody Hoose late in the period gave the Panthers a 42-35 going into the fourth. Vicek scored the first four points of the fourth quarter and Lausch added two late buckets in the frame pushing the Panthers to the 57-43 win and pushing their record on the season to 3-2.

“We are just trying to get people experience and play well,” said Vicek. “We lose a lot of seniors next year and we just want to play together and play well.”

Patrick O’Rourke and Hoose each scored seven points in the win, Lausch netted four and Gary Martin and Jordan Johnson each had two.
