Long wait ends for Alberton - State C boys' tournament

BILLINGS - It was a long wait for the Alberton Panthers.

The Panthers unleashed 35 years of pent up emotion on Hays-Lodgepole on Thursday afternoon at the State C boysí basketball tournament at Billings Metra.



The result was their first-ever win at a state tournament, 67-52 over Hays-Lodgepole, in their first trip to state since 1971.

Geof Dehne scored 24 points to lead ninth-ranked Alberton (24-2) into Fridayís 6:30 p.m. semifinal against third-ranked Melstone (23-1), a 61-44 winner of Fairview on Thursday.

Dehne hit two 3-pointers around a basket by Brandon Kohlwes to give Alberton a 26-18 lead in the second quarter. Alberton led 31-24 at halftime.

A.J. LongSoldier scored 10 of his 15 points in the second half to lead Hays-Lodgepole (13-12). The freshman guard scored eight straight points to cut Albertonís lead to 41-37 in the third quarter.

But Alberton answered with a 3-pointer by Dehne and a three-point play by Matt Vicek to give the Panthers a 47-38 lead.

Alberton led 49-39 at the end of the third quarter, and outscored Hays-Lodgepole 18-13 in the fourth.

Melstone 61, Fairview 44

Adam Weisz scored 27 points Thursday to lead Melstone to a 61-44 victory over Fairview in the first round of the state Class C boys basketball tournament.

After Bo Selvig of Fairview hit a 3-pointer to give his team a 14-12 lead with 7:40 remaining in the second quarter, Weisz got a steal and a layup to tie the score at 14 with 4:16 left and then hit a short jump shot at the 3:37 mark to give the Broncs a 16-14 lead. They never trailed again.

Melstone (23-1), which also got 17 points from Kale Eike, led 25-18 at halftime. Weisz opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer and caused a turnover and scored a basket with 6:57 left in the third to give his team a 30-18 lead.

Heart Butte 60, Highwood 56

Jesse Brave Rock scored 27 points and grabbed 18 rebounds Thursday as Heart Butte rallied from a 22-point second-quarter deficit to beat Highwood 60-56 Thursday in the opening game of the state Class C boysí basketball tournament.

Brave Rock, a 6-foot-10 senior center who also blocked five shots, scored 17 of his points in the second half as the Warriors rallied from an early 31-9 deficit.

Heart Butte (17-8) didnt take its first lead until Joe Wagner swished a 3-pointer from the side to put the Warriors ahead 49-48 with 4:43 remaining.

The lead changed hands four times before Heart Butte went ahead for keeps 53-52 on a turnaround jumper by Brave Rock with 3:11 remaining.

Chris Gobert made 3-of-4 free throws in the final 30 seconds to help preserve the lead for the Warriors. He finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.

Park City 49, Whitewater 48

Joe Darkenwald scored 13 points, including the game-winning free throws with 1:35 remaining, to lift Park City to a 49-48 upset of previously unbeaten Whitewater in the first round of the state Class C boys basketball tournament Thursday.

Whitewater (24-1) trailed by eight points in the fourth quarter before rallying to take a 48-47 lead on a 3-pointer by Kalvin Reichelt with 2:45 remaining.

After the teams traded turnovers, Darkenwald hit two free throws to put Park City up 49-48.

The Panthers (24-3) never got the ball back, but survived when Whitewater missed its final four shots, including a 10-foot floater by Reichelt that bounced off the front of the rim at the buzzer.

Gardiner 72, Heart Butte 52

Bodie Tobin scored 24 points and grabbed 14 rebounds Thursday to lead Gardiner to a 72-52 victory over Heart Butte in the first round of the state Class C boys basketball tournament.

Heart Butte (17-9), playing in its second game, led by eight points twice in the first half. Jesse Brave Rock blocked five shots and altered several others before Gardiner (24-1) adjusted.

The score was tied at 30 at halftime and Gardiner pulled away in the second half.

Guard Jason Tanascu finished with 17 points and eight assists, while Nick Broadhead also scored 17 and Damon Mitchell added 12.

Broadhead hit two 3-pointers early in the third quarter and Tanascu hit another as the Bruins took a 46-34 lead. Gardiner outscored Heart Butte 27-9 in the third quarter.
